Top 10 Korean Dramas of the Decade (2020) – Part 1

Moving on with 2020 we are carrying a lot of memories from the previous years. Every year has proved to be interesting and thrilling for all of us K-drama fans. It’s time to look back on some of the top Korean dramas of the last decade.

Here goes the list of the dramas that are still fresh in our memories.

1. Goblin: The lonely and great god

A drama with a roller-coaster ride of emotions, it has everything one can look for from comedy, happiness, romance, separation, magic, supernatural to everything. Kim-shin (Gong Yoo) was an unbeatable general during ancient times, but this quality of his was an eyesore to the young King. His order for him to not return from the war alive was not fulfilled by Kim-shin. The king orders him to be dead and if he doesn’t then his family would die. He agrees and is killed by his sword, but the Deity had something else planned for him. He becomes an immortal Goblin and can only die when his bride removes the sword from his chest.

In the year 2016 lives a girl Ji Eun Tak (Kim Go Eun) who is a senior high schooler who lives with her Hitler aunt and 2 cousins. She is treated as a slave and is haunted every day by them for her mother’s insurance. She has a unique ability to see, hear and talk to ghosts, She finds her life entangled with Kim-shin. She hears that she is the supposed Goblin’s bride, which changes her life. Other characters in this drama gives a unique impact on the story.

This story has a lot of ups and downs with a different context (replace context with narrative) and storyline

2. My Mister

A relationship between a middle-aged man and a girl in her 20’s, not based on love but pain. Park Dong Hoon (Lee Sun Kyun) is a middle-aged man who is married and works in a construction company. (He is aware of his) Aware that his wife is having an affair with his boss, (but) he doesn’t wish to break his marriage. This makes him feel miserable.

On the other side working in the same firm is Lee Ji An (IU) who has lived a hard life and has (become mature beyond her age) matured before her age. She lives with her deaf grandmother and is indebted with a large sum of money. Both Dong Hoon and Ji An get’s entangled and they help each other to overcome their (difficulties in – replace miserable) miserable life (add together).

3. Signal

This time travel drama was a hit in the year 2016. A story about 3 detectives, one who is in the year 2000 and two who are in the year 2016 connected in past and future through a walkie talkie. Lieutenant Park Hae Young (Lee Jae Hoon) despite being a cop himself does not trust the police due to his past bad experience as a kid when the police failed to arrest the killer of his friend. Now solving cold cases with Cha Soo-Hyun (Kim Hye Soo). Hae Young eventually finds out that he was talking to the detective Lee Jae-Han(Cho Jin Woong) the whole time who is solving his friend’s murder case.

4. Prison Playbook

Prison is probably the worse place one would want to see their friend in. Kim Je Hyeok (Park Hae Soo) an amazing baseball player planning to go to the US to join a major league team is sentenced to 1 year of prison because he injured someone in the midst of saving his sister. He is now trying to adapt himself with life in prison and deal with the hardships, being away from his love and sister. His friend Lee Joon Ho (Jung Kyoung Ho) who is an officer in the same prison seems sad to find his friend in the situation he is in.

5. Sky Castle

A drama revolving around the lives of 4 women living in one of the most luxurious neighborhoods called SKY CASTLE. All 4 are married to successful doctors, businessmen but still trying to be above one another. They move on to educate and train their children as they are prince and princess. This drama seems to give a realistic look at how upper-class families are.

6. Mother

We have always been taught that school is our second home and teachers are our second parents. This drama somewhat gives proof to that saying. When Soo Jin (Lee Bo Young) an elementary teacher notices something odd in one of her students and finds out that she is being abused by her mother at home. Soo-Jin finds a chance and kidnaps her student to give her the motherly love that she deserves.

7. Healer

One certain thing is that 2014 was all about Healer. This series is one of the top-rated dramas of 2014. A night courier by the name Healer is always available for his clients to get what they want if he is being given the right price and (if it) doesn’t involve murder, he also has a genius hacker backing him up. His job makes him involved in the life tragedy of Chae Young Shin (Park Min Young) who is a second rate journalist and Kim Moon Ho (Yu Ji Tae) who is a successful reporter in one of the biggest news channels. The Healer finds his past also connected to them as he goes deeper.

8. Stranger

A prosecutor who lost his feelings of empathy is required to solve a serial murder case with a police lieutenant. During the process, the way he deals and overcomes the hardships to solve the case makes this a must-watch drama.

9. Reply 1988

A simple but very interesting drama about the life of 5 teens in the year 1988 and how they survived their teen life by depending on each other. The struggles of their family, also with the ups and downs in their life is also shown. The combined effect of the cast has left a remarkable impression on the fans.

10. Life on Mars

The last decade seemed to be a decade of time travel. There were many dramas with that concept. One amazing drama that comes in mind is Life on Mars.

Han Tae Jo leading an investigation team in 2018 trusts more on technology and data. One fine day he meets an accident and is taken to the hospital but to his surprise when he wakes up he is in the year 1988 as a police officer appointed to work in a police station in a small town. His efforts to go back to 2018 leads him to his past and a serial murder case in the year 1988. He tries to solve them to return.

  1. Not a bad list by any means but in my opinion Stranger has to be higher and where is On The Way To The Airport? That was my personal favorite of recent years if not ever.
